From the Big Chair
------------------
If you're wondering where the list of distribution sites for Dateline
went, it got moved from the top of the issue to the bottom since it was
getting so long.
Meanwhile, there's a lot to read in this issue before you get to the
list, so get cracking!

News from Over the Hailing Frequencies....
------------------------------------------
ONE AWOL VULCAN
Leonard Nimoy was quoted in the January 14th "Daily Variety" as
reporting he would not be in the upcoming TNG film due to "creative
differences." (Thanks to Bruin II for the post.)
Also on the movie front: guest speakers (Herman Zimmermann, William
Shatner) at conventions are confirming portions of the plot summary for the
film that was printed in the tabloid "Globe." Among them:
*****Skip this paragraph if you don't want to know!*****
The film opens with the Classic cast attending the commissioning of a
new starship. (Reportedly this is the Enterprise-B.)
Kirk meets Guinan and Picard in the film.
The Duras sisters are in the movie.
Non-Globe stuff from Herman Zimmermann (TNG/DS9 set designer): current
film budget is $35 million. One new Enterprise set will be a stellar
cartography lab.
****OK, resume reading!*****
NOT QUITE AT THE GOLDEN GLOBES
Colm Meaney was up for Best Actor, Musical/Comedy (for the film
"Snapper") at the Golden Globes, but lost for Robin Williams ("Mrs.
Doubtfire").
WILL RIKER LOOKS FORWARD TO NEW TAX DEDUCTION
Genie Francis and Jonathan Frakes are pregnant. ;) This will be their
first child, due in August. (Reportedly, Genie's pregnancy will be written
into her current role on "General Hospital.")
PARAMOUNT NETWORK GROWS
The proposed Paramount Network picked up more stations as affiliates in
January: KTVD-TV in Denver, KAIL-TV in Fresno, WLMT-TV in Memphis, KTFO-TV in
Tulsa, KASN-TV in Little Rock, and WJTC-TV in Mobile. This brings the
network to 25 affiliates, including stations in seven of the top ten TV
markets. Coverage around the country for its premiere with "Voyager" in
January '95 is estimated at 85%.
A partial list of Paramount Network affiliates includes (anyone who
knows who I'm missing, feel free to drop me a note!):
Chicago: WPWR
Dallas/Fort Worth: KTXA
Denver: KTVD
Detroit: WKBD
Fresno: KAIL
Houston: KTXH
Little Rock: KASN
Memphis: WLMT
Mobile: WJTC
Philadelphia: WTXF
Portland, OR: KPTV (I have not confirmed this station)
Raleigh/Durham: WLFL
San Antonio: KRRT
Tulsa: KTFO
Washington DC: WDCA
MORE VOYAGER NEWS:
Notes from Rick Berman in the current "ST:The Official Fan Club
Magazine":
In the two-hour premiere, the Voyager is on a relatively routine mission
looking or someone that they have planted on another ship that is crewed by a
group of people called the Maquis -- a group comprised of well-meaning
ex-Starfleet officers and other who have formed somewhat of a renegade,
vigilante group to combat Cardassian raids and attacks on Federation planets
along the Cardassian/Federation border.
This is a group that is taking the law into their own hands, so to
speak, and the Federation needs to stop it. Starfleet has planted one of
their own people on this ship but has lost contact with him and so they go in
search of the renegade ship. Through a rare astronomical phenomena, the
Voyager and the Maquis ship find themselves transported literally at the edge
of the galaxy -- a distance that would take them decades to get home.
Knowing that the galaxy is filled with wormholes and folds in space, etc.,
our new team of Starfleet officers and the crew of the Maquis ship begin
their search, together, for a way home. They're certainly not going to
settle for a 70 year voyage. In the interim, they will be
exploring and gathering information for Starfleet and going literally where
no one has gone before.
Among the crew is a middle aged Vulcan in his late 50s. The Vulcan
character ends up as the head of security abroad the ship.
There is a half-human and half-Klingon female who is somewhat repelled by her
Klingon traits.
A native American character comes from a colony that was founded in the
23rd century by Southwestern Indians from the United States who decided to
try to retain their cultural identity by forming a colony on another planet
out near the Cardassian border. This is a gentleman who left that colony and
returned to Earth to attend Starfleet. He becomes a very pivotal and unique
character for the series.
Also: a holographic character who works with the crew but is limited to
the holodeck (Michael Piller has said outside this
interview that this character will be a ship's doctor); an
Asian-American who is fresh out of Starfleet Academy; a human captain. Two
characters are going to be a couple of aliens who are from two different
species that we have never seen before. They come from this area of the
galaxy that the Voyager finds itself in. These people join the crew during
the course of the first episode. The woman is from a species that is very
integral to the first two-hour episode. Her species has a remarkably short
life span of only eight to nine years and a different appreciation of life
and of time than we do.
Lastly, we have a young human officer who was dishonorably discharged
and is brought back to Starfleet --even though there is some questionable
activity in his past -- because he has information about the renegades.

Editorial: The Good and the Bad
by Bill Mason
-------------------------------
THE GOOD: "Lower Decks"! A phenomenal episode all around. Ensign Sito,
almost an afterthought in "The First Duty," returns and instantly attains the
status of tragic heroine, and a place in Trekkers' hearts.
The focus on the junior officers is also immediately embraced by the
fans. As much as we love our stalwart senior staff, the Enterprise *is* a
ship of 1000+, after all. Meeting more of those people only enhances the
sense of starship as community that should exist on the Enterprise more
often, but usually goes by the wayside in telling week-to-week stories.
Star Trek fans have a habit of latching onto characters besides the main
cast: Kyle from TOS, Miles O'Brien (who of course is a "main cast" person
now), Ensign Ro (geez I miss her), Barclay, and so on. How many people still
wish Saavik had come back too? |) Yet it seems to be hit or miss whether
these characters come back again. Now we have the "Lower Decks" group: don't
let them get away!
This is a good time to re-recommend the TOS novels
"Dreadnaught!" and "Battlestations!" for those who want more of that "Lower
Decks"/junior officer style of storytelling.
THE BAD: The Center for Media and Public Affairs did another study of
violence on television. In their whiz-bang survey, both TNG and DS9 were
ranked among the top 10 most violent shows on network (ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox) or
syndication.
The survey was done by counting violent acts in the season
premiere for all the shows studied. As soon as someone can tell me how any
of these shows *didn't* make the top ten, I'll take this study more
seriously: "Cops," "Code 3," "America's Most Wanted," any cop show on the air
at the time (it's not clear what season's shows were screened, but the
closest things to a cop show that made the top 10 were "The Untouchables" and
"South of Sunset," a detective show that was only on the air for *one*
episode).... Violence by the
study's definition included "unarmed assaults". Even "The Simpsons" probably
should break the top 10 with that definition. ("Why you little...!" ::sound
of Bart choking::)
Someone should tell this Center about watching a series in
context. But hey, not to worry, "South of Sunset" was cancelled so the world
is safer tonight!
(For the record, their top ten was: "Highlander, " "Acapulco
H.E.A.T.," "Renegade," "Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.," TNG, "The
Untouchables," "seaQuest DSV," DS9, "Walker, Texas Ranger," and "South of
Sunset."
The "Saturday Night Live" Appearance by Patrick Stewart
by CraigL6595
----------------------------------------------------
When I first heard that Patrick Stewart was hosting Saturday Night Live,
I was excited. But after watching the show, I was really unhappy. Patrick
Stewart participated in what I felt were disgusting skits that had to do with
condoms, sex, and other subjects that I won't mention. I used to like Mr.
Stewart as an actor, but now I have second thoughts. I never thought he
would agree to do "crappy" humor on TV. If I was Patrick Stewart, I would
have been embarrassed. He should have walked off the stage like he did that
one time when he was on a morning talk show.
Mutiny on the Enterprise?
Scotty speaks out on Trek, Fans and James T. Kirk!
by Jim Rubino
--------------------------------------------------
Rumors have flurried for years that all was not well on the set of the
original "Star Trek." Disputes between cast members have been talked about
in fan magazines and at conventions since the original series folded in 1969.
But as the original cast step off the USS Enterprise for the final
disembarkation, some of them doing a lot more talking than in years past.
On January 23, 1994 Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott had some choice
things to say about his comrades. Speaking at the 10th Anniversary
"Trek-Fest" in Miami, actor James Doohan spoke highly of his shipmates...that
is all but one. Captain Kirk doesn't fare to well with the grizzled
Starfleet engineer, and Jimmy Doohan says that of all the crew he served with
for more than 25 years, William Shatner was the worst.
Doohan answered questions for several hundreds of eager and appreciative
fans. After playing trivia, spouting some of "Scotty's" most notable TV
lines, and a few movie favorites, Doohan lashed out at an "egocentric"
Shatner whom he said stole more scenes and women on-screen and more glory
off-screen than any five of the others combined. "I don't like the man,"
Doohan said bluntly, recounting some of Shatner's renown temper tantrums and
ego-trips during their long association.
"If I knew he was gonna be like this," the actor added in
Scottish dialect, "I would'na saved him so many times!"
Doohan also blamed Shatner as one of the reasons that the
original plans for the seventh "Trek" to the silver screen may not involve
all of the original cast. He did slip that the original plan was for a story
that would intertwine the original Enterprise crew with that from the Next
Generation and into the planned "Voyager" series. "I won't know if I'm to be
on the set until my agent calls me," says the Irish-American actor and now
"soap opera" star.
Jimmy Doohan has a great deal of respect for other "Trek"-mates,
especially Leonard Nimoy ("We all know who the best director was...and the
worst"), George Takei and Nichelle Nichols ("A beautiful lass, a wonderful
singer and best of all...Uhura loves Scotty ...") But it was Shatner's
demand for a $6 million paycheck for 15 minutes of screen time that
infuriated Rick Berman and the "Trek" heirs, said the actor -- a demand which
also infuriated Doohan and his friends on the cast. Doohan revealed that
Nimoy was offered, and rejected, the chance to direct "Star Trek VII". Nimoy
reportedly
also wanted a mega-million dollar figure. "If he directs, and acts, it's
worth it".
Of his new "Trek" friends on the 24th century Enterprise, Doohan said,
"They treated me like a king. I walked onto the set of 'Relics' and they all
went quiet, then someone shouted 'It's him' and they all made me feel right
at home." Montgomery Scott may visit Enterprise again before the show's June
finale, or he may pay a visit to "Deep Space Nine." "The producers keep
getting all kinds of mail asking if Scotty will be back." And the man who
immortalized the character says that he's ready for another deep space
adventure.
There's some more roles for James Doohan in the future but for
now daytime drama fans can catch a glimpse of him on the small screen.
Jimmy Doohan, however, is glad that a reading for a bit part in 1965 has made
him a legend, three hundred years into the future. "You want to know what
makes it all worthwhile? You! The people who watch us work and appreciate
what we do. I appreciate you and love you all."
Happy Birthday!

There's a Klingon warship in the hearing-room display case of the

Station was, well, lost in space.
